Housemarque released today (19) the Zenith update for SAROS, the PS5 action shooter that blends bullet hell with action gameplay: free for all owners of the game, the update arrives with a new score-chasing mode, the game's New Game+ and a reinforced package of accessibility options. The details were revealed on the official PlayStation Blog and recorded by Inven Global and IGN.

"I can't wait to hear what players think about all of the new control options, see your Crown-equipped Photo mode snaps, and compete (and likely lose) to your high scores in Overlord Rush."

Farewell note from the Housemarque team on the official PlayStation blog, freely translated.

Overlord Rush: the boss arena

The headline mode is Overlord Rush, a challenge mode where the goal is to fight for the highest score by facing the powerful Overlords from the campaign in succession. Access goes through the Primary Unit in Passage, styled as a training simulation: three Overlords in each of the first two sets — Incursion and Ascension, which can be completed in about 10 minutes — and the final set, called Totality, lines up all eight Overlords from Carcosa in one continuous gauntlet. Rankings have an integrated global leaderboard, with filters by primary weapon to compare playstyles.

Eclipse Layers: the house-made New Game+

Anyone who has already beaten SAROS gets a new destination: the New Game+ called Eclipse Layers. After finishing the campaign, mysterious nodes are added to the Armor Matrix in Passage — each one opens the way to the next layer, a more intense version of the game with altered rules and deadlier enemies. To enter, you must activate a minimum number of challenge modifiers, the Trial Modifiers, assembling your own suffering set from 25 available options.

Once inside the Eclipse Layers, protagonist Arjun changes his look: he wears a Crown and his armor glows golden — and the more Trials are active, and the higher the Modifier Balance value climbs, the bigger and more ornate the Crown gets. There are also 12 new collectible Visions, murals and messages etched in stone by an ancient king that reveal extra narrative details as the Crown's tier rises.

Twenty new difficulty modifiers

The Carcosan Modifiers system — which defines how Carcosa "fights back" — gains 20 new pieces: 10 protectors, to lower the difficulty, and 10 trials, to raise the bar. Among the protectors is an effect that converts corruption stored in the armor into extra melee damage. On the trial side, the highlight is Hostile Regeneration: certain large enemies recover quickly after being stunned by weapon attacks, and eliminating them now requires the finishing melee strike.

The risk-and-reward structure is the heart of the update: far from simply making the game easier or harder, Housemarque handed players control over how Carcosa reacts. The post-game expansion also came with new trophies and secrets tied to the extra content, as confirmed in the update reveal.

Accessibility for newcomers

For those arriving now, the list is generous: a High-Contrast mode to improve visual contrast, gyro aiming using the DualSense and the Slow Game Speed option, which reduces gameplay speed without altering enemy attack patterns or projectile counts — with adjustable slowdown level and custom activation. There is also auto-fire, which discharges weapons automatically when you aim at a target. Reloading, however, remains manual: timing the Perfect Reload is still the player's job, now with more comfort around it.

The technical detail that separates Slow Game Speed from a shallow easy mode: attack patterns and projectile counts stay identical. Players still read the same bullet hell, on the same layout — with more time to decide what to do. It is a different philosophy from simply reducing bullets on screen: instead of emptying the challenge, Housemarque widened the reaction window for those who need it, keeping intact the design that made the studio's name. Combined with auto-fire and gyro aiming, the package lowers the genre's entry barrier without turning SAROS into a different game.

The gameplay trailer for the update is on the official PlayStation channel on YouTube.

SAROS in the Housemarque context

SAROS is a single-player, PS5-exclusive game released on April 30, 2026 by Housemarque — the Swedish team behind Returnal. The premise remains the house classic: a nearly impossible cycle, refined shooting and its own visual identity. In this case, the story follows Soltari Enforcer Arjun Devraj as he investigates secrets on the planet Carcosa, where an ominous eclipse repeats without end.

The track record helps explain the parallel: Returnal, the team's roguelite from 2021, lived on a similar structure — death-and-return loops with permanent progression — and received content updates and accessibility support over time. SAROS inherits the DNA, but trades the mortality loop for a campaign structure with timed runs: death does not restart the game, it accelerates Carcosa's clock. That is the context where an update like Zenith makes sense: it gives veterans a reason to return to the planet and newcomers a gentler staircase to get there.

Zenith is, in practice, a rare case in a closed game: post-game content, a score arena and accessibility gathered in a single update, at no extra cost. The design echoes the live-service routine, but applied to a title that will not depend on a server to exist — and it arrives while the game still builds on solid commercial performance.
