God of War: Laufey dated for PS5 on February 16, 2027. Play as Faye in the gods' afterlife to protect Kratos and Atreus.
Sony has officially announced the release date for the next chapter of the God of War franchise. Titled God of War: Laufey, the new PlayStation 5 exclusive hits the market on February 16, 2027. Developed by Santa Monica Studio, the title stars Faye — the legendary giant warrior and late wife of Kratos — as the playable protagonist in a brand-new journey.
The underworld of the gods and Faye's unprecedented journey
The story follows Faye waking up in an unknown land after her death. The protagonist must navigate “Everywhere”, the spiritual plane that serves as the afterlife of the gods. This new realm holds dangerous magic and serves as a battleground for cruel deities from various mythologies actively fighting for supreme power. Faye's central mission in this dimension involves protecting Kratos and Atreus against threats seeking to reach her family beyond mortal life.
Legendary abilities and leadership against the Aesir gods
Known in the franchise's lore as the leader of the giants' (Jotunn) resistance against the Aesir gods, Faye will defend the territories with the combat style that made her legendary in Midgard's history. The gameplay mechanics feature agile movement, high-precision strikes, and the warrior's own powerful magic. Santa Monica Studio confirmed that the concept directly expands the character's story, which until now had appeared only indirectly or through mentions in previous titles.
How the new game connects to the Norse saga
The project serves as a deeper dive into the universe built by Santa Monica Studio. Although it works as a story focused on the giant's individual journey, playing God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök provides the foundation needed to understand the motivations, the weight of alliances, and the relationships of the characters in the new adventure.
