The Thunder Core sits in a chest on the top floor of Pangzhen Inn in Phantom Blade Zero. To reach it, start at Marketplace Bell, clear the mist-covered doorway with the Illusory Pipa, then fight your way through the building’s three floors. The item is required to Soul Temper the Thunder Spear; after the upgrade, the weapon gains Cascading Thunder, an effect that sends attacks toward nearby enemies. The route was detailed in TheGamer’s guide published on October 29, 2026, while PC Gamer’s Illusory Pipa walkthrough confirms the instrument prerequisite.

The route is brief once the instrument is repaired, but that requirement can confuse players who reach the inn before collecting all of its parts. This guide separates the prerequisite, the correct entrance, the chest location and the return trip for the upgrade. You can check which step is missing without repeating areas you have already cleared or searching for the item in another part of the region.

What the Thunder Core unlocks

The Thunder Core is an upgrade material for the Thunder Spear, a Phantom Edge that uses electricity to extend its damage during combat. It is not a standalone weapon, nor is it automatically awarded for completing the main story. The item is inside an optional chest in the inn and must be taken back to the Soul Tempering point before its special effect becomes available.

Once the core is applied, Cascading Thunder lets the electrical discharge reach up to two opponents near the original target. TheGamer’s guide describes the effect this way:

“When it hits an enemy, lightning chains to two more nearby, dealing 100 percent and 50 percent of the original damage.”
— TheGamer’s Phantom Blade Zero guide

In practical terms, the effect matters most when enemies are grouped: the discharge transfers part of its damage to two nearby opponents, with a different value for each jump. That does not guarantee the secondary targets will be defeated in one hit; the result still depends on their remaining health, defenses and the circumstances of the fight. The core improves a tool you already own, so there is no need to search for a second Thunder Spear.

Before you go: restore the Illusory Pipa

The inn’s entrance is hidden behind a mist barrier. To dispel it, complete the Illusory Pipa quest and receive the repaired instrument from Myst, who can be found in the Order’s underground tavern in Pangzhen. Myst can restore the Pipa only after you gather three pieces from different regions; finding one or two is not enough to pass through the barrier.

The pieces come from specific encounters: the Pipa Head is obtained after defeating Dusk, the Puppeteer, in the Village of Lu; the Backplate appears after the final boss in Mandate Encampment; and the Strings are held by Yan Qiansui, the Zither Maiden, at the opera house south of Meigu Lake. PC Gamer’s restoration guide also identifies those three steps. If you have already delivered the parts, speak to Myst and make sure the Illusory Pipa is available before returning to Marketplace Bell.

This check saves time because the mist cannot be removed by attacking, using the Thunder Spear or repeatedly interacting with the doorway. The Pipa is the required tool. When the game lets you activate it in front of the barrier, use the contextual action shown on screen; the exact input can vary with your control setup. If the interaction prompt does not appear, check your inventory and Myst’s dialogue instead of continuing to try regular attacks.

Leave Marketplace Bell and open the entrance

Start at Marketplace Bell, the fast-travel checkpoint in Pangzhen. Face the staircase leading away from the bell and go down. At the bottom, turn left and look for the Pangzhen Inn entrance, which is covered by mist. Do not head for another market building: the key reference is the stairs in front of the bell and the passage to the left once you reach street level.

At the barrier, equip or select the Illusory Pipa and use it on the mist. The cleared passage leads inside the inn. TheGamer notes that the location is close to Marketplace Bell, so you do not need to travel to another region or return to the Village of Lu. If the map or camera angle makes it hard to orient yourself, go back to the bell and repeat the sequence: descend the stairs, turn left and enter through the covered doorway.

After entering, keep the goal in mind: reach the third and final floor. The core is not out on the street, in a market stall or in a chest on the first floor. You also do not need to finish the side quest available upstairs to open the chest. The Pipa opens access; exploration and the fights inside lead you to the material.

Climb the inn’s three floors

The inn has three floors, and reaching the top involves encounters on each level. The original guide describes three enemies per floor and calls out a Zither player among them. Move up the stairs after clearing each room and check the corners before moving on, since the passages and enemies can pull your attention away from the main objective. There is no elevator or alternate exit to find: keep climbing inside the same building.

Fight the enemies using the combat rhythm you already know. The musician’s presence makes it sensible to track their position during each encounter, but the source does not provide a mandatory strategy, a unique weakness or a recommended character level. Use healing and resources as your character needs them, and do not waste time trying to open the chest before reaching the final floor: it is upstairs, not along the route between the lower rooms.

On the third floor, look for a room on the left with a hole in the floor. That opening is the clearest landmark for finding the item. Enter the room and drop through the gap; the chest is just ahead in the lower space. Open it to receive the Thunder Core. If you reached the top and only found the woman sitting on a table at the back, explore the left side as well: she and the chest are separate points on the same floor.

The optional quest upstairs and the return trip

The woman sitting on a table toward the back of the top floor starts the Don’t Forget Me side quest. Speaking to her is optional for the core: TheGamer separates the encounter from the chest and places the Thunder Core in the room on the left, by the hole in the floor. You can talk to her before or after collecting the item, but you do not have to finish her quest to open the chest.

After picking up the material, return to Marketplace Bell. The same checkpoint you used to reach the inn is the reference for returning to Soul Tempering. Interact with the upgrade point and choose the Thunder Spear; the game should show that the Thunder Core can be consumed to unlock Cascading Thunder. Check the weapon name in the menu before confirming, since the core is specific and Soul Tempering is different from simply equipping or swapping a Phantom Edge.

If the option does not appear, first check that the Thunder Core is in your inventory and that Myst has taught you Soul Tempering. Then make sure the selected weapon is the Thunder Spear rather than another Phantom Edge. The guide consulted does not list an additional coin or material cost beyond the core, so there is no basis for claiming an extra price. If the interface asks for another requirement, follow the in-game prompt and do not confuse this upgrade with a generic equipment enhancement.

How to use Cascading Thunder

The electrical chain can help in fights with nearby targets because one activation reaches two opponents beyond the first. According to TheGamer’s explanation, the first secondary hit deals 100% of the original damage and the second deals 50%. Against a lone boss, the benefit of hitting multiple targets naturally falls; against groups, it can help distribute damage without changing equipment.

That does not remove the need to pay attention to spacing. The extra targets must be close enough to the first one for the discharge to reach them. The guide does not specify a numerical radius, so it would be inaccurate to promise that the effect covers an entire room. Try the weapon in encounters with clustered enemies and compare the result with your current approach; the upgrade adds a tactical option, not a guarantee of victory.

In short, the route is: restore the Illusory Pipa with Myst, leave Marketplace Bell down the stairs in front, turn left, clear the three floors of Pangzhen Inn and look for the hole in the room on the left of the top floor. The chest contains the Thunder Core; then return to the bell and Soul Temper the Thunder Spear.
