Heading back to the streets of New Bordeaux now comes with an incentive: Mafia III: Definitive Edition has arrived on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with 60 fps gameplay. The launch marks ten years since Lincoln Clay's adventure, but anyone planning to resume an old campaign needs to know one detail: PS4 and Xbox One saves do not carry over to the new versions.

The news was announced on October 8, 2026, alongside an update for the Steam version. According to Inven Global, the improvements are part of the work to bring the franchise up to date on current consoles.

Who gets the free upgrade?

2K laid out the rules in the official announcement: owners of Mafia III: Definitive Edition for PS4, physical or digital, receive the digital PS5 version. On Xbox, the benefit applies to digital Xbox One copies; physical ones are left out.

You need to download the new version separately. Depending on the account and the edition purchased, players will have to add it to their library through the store, at no cost. If the license is not recognized, the company's guidance is to contact 2K support.

What changes in Mafia III?

Beyond 60 fps gameplay, the update fixes mission progression issues, trophy and achievement tracking, lighting and the display of scenery elements. Real-time rendered scenes run at 60 fps; some pre-rendered cinematics remain at 30 fps.

On PC, the Steam patch also brings stability, character behavior and interface tweaks. These are changes aimed at making the experience more consistent.

Ten years of Lincoln Clay's story

Mafia III debuted on October 7, 2016. Set in 1968, it follows Lincoln Clay's revenge against the mafia that rules New Bordeaux.

The celebration includes an announced promotion with 80% off the digital edition for PlayStation, Xbox and Steam. Prices and conditions should be checked in the player's regional store.
