GTA 6 fan Jerry Fort dies weeks before launch

Jerry Fort, known online as “Void Only”, died at 25 on October 29 after complications from a lung transplant. GTA 6 arrives on November 19, 2026.

Jerry Fort, the content creator known online as “Void Only”, died at 25 on Thursday, October 29, from complications of a lung transplant. His sister confirmed the death in a video posted to his social media accounts on Monday (2), less than three weeks before Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19. Diagnosed with interstitial lung disease at 17, he became known in August after posting from the ICU that he wanted to live long enough to play the game — a video that passed 8 million views in two days and turned the wait for Rockstar’s title into a worldwide mobilization.
Jerry’s story reached far beyond the usual circle of gaming fans. Within weeks, a campaign asking for $15,000 for a high-risk surgery had raised more than $100,000 from roughly 5,000 donations. The ending, however, came sooner than the community hoped: the transplant took place in September, but his condition deteriorated because of a severe lung infection, according to family accounts reported by international outlets.
Who was Jerry Fort, the “Void Only” creator
A native of Florida, Jerry Fort had been posting music and gaming content on TikTok since 2022 under the handle Void Only. A self-proclaimed Kingdom Hearts fanatic, he also talked often about Warframe, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Hitman and, of course, GTA 6. Music was central to his identity: even while hospitalized and dependent on an oxygen tube, he kept recording and sharing songs.
The interstitial lung disease had followed Jerry since his teens. It is a group of conditions that stiffens and scars lung tissue, progressively reducing the ability to breathe. Over eight years, the disease advanced to the point where a transplant was no longer an alternative but the only chance of survival. His mother, Paris Fort, described her son’s routine in a crowdfunding campaign launched on August 8: “He has always pushed through pain to show up for the people he loves, to create beautiful work, and to keep going with strength and heart.”
The August 8 video that went viral
It was also on August 8 that Jerry posted the clip that would change his story. Lying in a hospital bed with an oxygen tube on his face, he explained that his lungs could no longer sustain his body and that he would remain in the ICU until he received a new organ. Over the image, he wrote the line that summed up how millions of people felt: “I just want to play GTA 6. Rockstar and their delays man…”
“Well, this day was inevitable. I’m at the end of my ropes. My lungs can’t do it no more. So, I’m going to be in the ICU until I get a lung transplant.”
The video drew more than 8 million views in about 48 hours and over 1.5 million likes. In the comments, strangers promised to buy him the game once it launched. Jerry never asked Rockstar for anything — he made a point of saying so — but he answered the support with a promise: if he survived, he would livestream GTA 6 on the day it hit stores.
“We make it out on the other side of this thing, I will be streaming GTA 6 whenever that drops. That’s going to be our goal as a community.”
The fundraiser that passed $100,000
The campaign “Help My Son Reach His Lung Transplant” was launched by Paris Fort with an initial goal of $15,000, the amount required by the medical team to start the transplant process, plus the family’s temporary relocation and the period when she would have to step away from work — six to twelve months of recovery. The goal was met within days. On Tuesday (3), the page showed $101,350 raised from about 5,090 donations.
| Indicator | Value |
|---|---|
| Original goal | $15,000 |
| Total raised | $101,350 |
| Number of donations | about 5,090 |
| Campaign launched | August 8, 2026 |
Transplant in September and the complications
Jerry received the new lung in September, about a month after the video went viral. The surgery was considered extremely high risk: his lungs were attached to his chest wall, which made removal a delicate procedure. In one of the accounts published before the operation, he explained that the process involved “ripping apart my lungs from my chest wall, physically ripping them, then pulling them out, then replacing them with new lungs”.
Recovery, however, did not go as the family hoped. According to the statement made by Jerry’s sister on his accounts, his condition worsened because of a severe lung infection that compromised the function of the transplanted organ. He died on October 29, four days before the family made the news public. The information was confirmed by outlets such as the Economic Times and IGN, which had followed the campaign since August.
“He was so happy. He felt like his dreams were coming true, and he wanted to give back like y’all gave to him.”
How the gaming community reacted
Jerry’s death prompted a wave of tributes on social media. Fans who had followed the campaign from the start began commenting on the family’s posts, promising to carry the name “Void” into GTA 6 — whether in player tags or custom characters. The reaction shows how the story stopped being simply that of a fan waiting for a game and became a portrait of the bond between online communities and the people who shape them.
The case also revived a recurring discussion among players: the habit of organizing campaigns and support chains for terminally ill fans who want to live until the release of a long-awaited title. In 2018, a terminally ill Dutch fan received a home demo of Red Dead Redemption 2 weeks before launch. Rockstar has never officially confirmed that kind of gesture, and Jerry always made clear that he did not expect special treatment from the company.
GTA 6 arrives on November 19
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on November 19, 2026, after more than a decade of waiting and two delays announced by Rockstar Games. The game arrives first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with pre-loading expected to begin on November 12. The story is set in Leonida, inspired by Florida, and follows the duo Jason and Lucia — the first female protagonist in the main series.
The launch is also expected to move the gaming market on a historic scale. Industry expectations are that the title will become one of the biggest releases of all time, with pre-orders already open in Brazil. For those who follow the Rockstar universe, the moment is one of technical anticipation and nostalgia: Jerry Fort will not be among the players on the 19th, but the promise of a livestream that never happened became a symbol of a community that decided to remember him.
Beyond the campaign’s numbers, Jerry Fort’s journey left a record of what video games mean to the people who follow them. In one of his last videos, he thanked supporters and said he did not expect “that much love”. His family said his final months were the happiest he had been in years, and that the money raised helped cover not only the surgery but also the relocation and treatment.

Jerry Fort was 25. He leaves behind his mother, Paris Fort, a sister, and a community that, for a few weeks, collectively hoped he would make it to November 19.
