GTA 6 may need 210 GB on PS5; Lexar SSD on sale
Published on · Updated on
A leak points to a 210 GB download for GTA 6 on PS5, while Lexar offers the 1 TB EQ790 SSD with a heatsink for around 199 euros in Europe through November.

GTA 6 arrives on PlayStation 5 on November 19, 2026, and may require around 210 GB of storage, according to PlayStation Game Size, an account that tracks data from the PlayStation Store backend. The figure was posted on October 27 and corroborated by Insider Gaming, but Rockstar has not confirmed it. In the same week, Lexar began promoting a 5% coupon for the 1 TB EQ790 SSD with a heatsink, which comes to about 199.49 euros on Amazon Germany — one option for players who need more space before preloading, expected to begin on November 12.
What the 210 GB figure means
The information did not come from an official announcement. PlayStation Game Size follows data published on PlayStation Store servers and has a strong track record with game sizes before release, but the account itself treats the number as an estimate subject to change. Rockstar has not addressed the claim and has not updated the official GTA 6 page with installation requirements.
According to the original post, the 210 GB refers to the Standard Edition, priced at $79.99, and precedes a preload set for November 12. The launch is confirmed for November 19 at midnight local time. Insider Gaming says it has corroborated the figure and describes it as a download size.
"Download Size: 210 GB. Standard ($79.99). Pre-Load: November 12. Release: November 19. Release Time: Midnight."
Two caveats matter. First, 210 GB may be only the initial download, excluding the day-one patch and future online updates. Second, the physical edition of GTA 6 ships with a download code rather than a disc, according to TechPowerUp. Even players who buy the box will need free space on the console and a stable connection.
For comparison, GTA 5 takes up around 100 GB on PS5, while Red Dead Redemption 2 uses about 150 GB depending on the version. At 210 GB, GTA 6 would rank among the largest releases ever by install size and helps explain why demand for compatible SSDs has risen in recent weeks.
How much space each PS5 model leaves
The number on the box does not match the space available for games. The PlayStation 5 system reserves part of the internal storage for console software, and the rest is what players see. The table below uses each model's nominal capacity and approximate usable space:
| Model | Internal storage | Approx. usable space | Share taken by GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (2020) | 825 GB | 667 GB | about 31% |
| PS5 Slim | 1 TB | 840 GB | about 25% |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB | 1.89 TB | about 11% |
On the launch model, GTA 6 alone would take up nearly a third of the available space. Anyone with Call of Duty, Fortnite and one or two Sony exclusives installed will likely need to delete games or buy an M.2 SSD before preloading. The PS5 Pro is more comfortable, but it still leaves less room than many players expect.
Lexar EQ790: what the SSD offers
The EQ790 with heatsink is an M.2 2280 SSD with a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface and the NVMe protocol. Lexar launched the heatsink version in August 2025 in 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB capacities. The 1 TB model is the one featured in this week's promotion.
| Specification | Lexar EQ790 1 TB with heatsink |
|---|---|
| Form factor | M.2 2280 |
| Interface | PCIe Gen4 x4, NVMe |
| Sequential read | up to 7,000 MB/s |
| Sequential write | up to 5,000 MB/s |
| Cache | DRAM-less, with HMB 3.0 and dynamic SLC cache |
| Endurance (TBW) | 600 TB |
| MTBF | 1.5 million hours |
| Dimensions with heatsink | 80 x 24 x 9.7 mm |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Compatibility | PC, PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro |
Its 7,000 MB/s read speed is above the 5,500 MB/s Sony recommends for PS5 expansion. In practice, games installed on a Gen4 SSD tend to load at speeds similar to the internal drive, although Sony notes that performance can vary from title to title.
The main caveat is the lack of DRAM. Instead of a dedicated cache chip, the EQ790 uses part of the system RAM through Host Memory Buffer (HMB) 3.0 and a dynamic SLC cache. For games, which read far more than they write, the difference is usually small. During large, sustained copies, such as moving 200 GB at once, a DRAM-less SSD can lose speed faster once the cache is exhausted. Lexar claims the drive uses up to 40% less power than Gen4 SSDs with DRAM.
"The heatsink prevents overheating, ensuring sustained peak speeds during intense gaming or workloads while improving longevity."
How the promotion works
Lexar says the coupon is valid from November 1 to November 30, 2026. The discount is 5% off the 209.99 euro reference price, bringing it to roughly 199.49 euros. The purchase is made on Amazon Germany, with the code applied at checkout. The process has four steps:
- Open the Amazon Germany page for the 1 TB EQ790 with heatsink. The model without a heatsink is a different product and is not part of the promotion.
- Add the item to your cart and proceed to checkout. Check whether the seller is Amazon itself or a reliable partner.
- Enter the code LXDEGOGTA6 in the coupon field. The discount should appear before you confirm the order.
- Check the final price and fees. Shipping, taxes and any import costs are not included in the advertised price.
SSD prices fluctuate widely, and 2026 has been a year of higher memory and storage costs. On the morning of November 3, the German product page showed 193.19 euros before the coupon, below the 209.99 euros used as a reference by the outlet that reported the deal. That does not mean the discount is larger: the listing can change seller, batch or price at any time. The safest approach is to check the cart total with the code applied before paying.
For readers outside Europe, the purchase requires extra care. The promotion is run by Amazon Germany in euros, and international shipping may include freight, duties and warranty differences. There is no indication that the same coupon applies to Amazon stores in other countries. Buyers who prefer local retailers should compare specifications, because not every M.2 SSD marketed as “PS5-compatible” includes a heatsink within Sony's height limit.
Is it worth buying for GTA 6?
It depends on the space you already have. To install GTA 6 and keep three or four other large games, 1 TB is usually enough. Players with a large library or plans to keep Call of Duty, Fortnite and several exclusives installed at once should consider 2 TB or 4 TB, which are also available in the EQ790 line but cost considerably more.
Sony requires an expansion SSD to use PCIe 4.0, deliver at least 5,500 MB/s read speed and stay within 11.25 mm in height with the heatsink, with no more than 8 mm above the board. The EQ790 meets those requirements. Installation takes about ten minutes: turn off the console, remove the cover, unscrew the bay plate, insert the SSD and secure it with the correct spacer. On the first boot, the PS5 formats the drive and tests its speed.
What to check before buying
It is worth remembering that PS5 games cannot run from an external USB hard drive. External storage can hold titles and transfer them later, but to play, a game must be on the internal storage or an M.2 SSD installed in the console. For GTA 6, that means an external hard drive will not solve the space problem.
What is still unconfirmed
Rockstar has not confirmed the 210 GB figure, and the number may change before launch. The Xbox Series X|S size has not been disclosed either. A day-one patch could increase the installation, and GTA 6's online mode, which is expected to receive updates for years, will likely push storage requirements higher over time. The November 19 date, however, is confirmed on Rockstar's official website, as are the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.
What to watch before November 19
Lexar's promotion is time-limited and stock-dependent. The coupon runs through November 30 but could end earlier if units sell out. Players who want to start on launch day should sort out storage before November 12, when preloading begins. Those still deciding should track the price for a few days and compare it with other brands that offer an integrated heatsink and local warranty.
The episode also illustrates the state of the console market. With GTA 6 days away, PS5-compatible SSDs are back in the spotlight, and retailers and manufacturers have begun using the game as a sales pitch. The decision to buy should consider actual free space, product provenance and total cost — not just the advertised discount. Read more gaming news and see why GTA 6 was optimized for PS5 Pro.
