Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Hits Netflix, Update 2.5 Live
Published on · Updated on
CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger's anime is now on Netflix, while Cyberpunk 2077's free Edgerunners 2 Update (2.5) arrives on PC, Mac and consoles.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the second season of the anime co-produced by CD PROJEKT RED and Japan’s Studio Trigger, premiered on Netflix on October 20 with all ten episodes released at once. Two days later, on Thursday, October 22, the Polish developer rolled out the free Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5 — officially dubbed the “Edgerunners 2 Update” — for PC, Mac, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, adding a quest inspired by the show, a new radio station, hand cyberware customization and a brand-new dual-wielding playstyle. The Nintendo Switch 2 version is coming soon.
The timing is no coincidence. Since the second season was announced, CD PROJEKT RED has treated the anime as part of its content strategy for the Night City universe, using the premiere as a showcase to reignite interest in the RPG launched in 2020. It repeats — and expands — what the company did with the first season in 2022, when the show helped revive the game’s player base.
A new crew, the same Night City
Like the first season, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077 but works as a standalone story built around an entirely new cast. Newcomers can start here without missing a beat: there is no direct continuity with David Martinez and Lucy’s crew.
The throughline is Weak, a veteran merc once known as “King”. Now in decline, he is forced to live without cybernetic implants while searching for meaning in a city that left him behind. In parallel, D, a netrunner from the Cobra Nation, embarks on a revenge mission against the killer who wiped out their clan — and stumbles onto corporate secrets that should never have surfaced.
Around them, the story weaves in characters such as Talia, raised in corporate towers but hardened under Maelstrom’s rule; Avida, a former jazz singer and Weak’s old flame, now married to a Kang Tao executive; and Roman, a young film buff obsessed with documenting the truth in a city that traded cinema for braindance. The official synopsis sets the tone:
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 takes you back to Night City, where lives intertwine to the extreme. [...] Across this standalone ten-episode series, you’ll experience a story of family, obsession, legacy... and how your perspective reflects the story of the people around you.”
From Imaishi to Ikarashi: who runs season 2
The production keeps the partnership that defined the first anime. On one side, CD PROJEKT RED, owner of the franchise and the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher games. On the other, Studio Trigger, the Japanese animation house known for Little Witch Academia, Dungeon Meshi, Promare and Gridman Universe. The pair delivers the new batch of episodes, streaming exclusively on Netflix.
In the director’s chair, Hiroyuki Imaishi — who helmed the first season — hands over to Kai Ikarashi, who previously worked on the original series and on SSSS.Gridman. Kanno Ichigo, with credits on Promare and the first season, serves as lead character designer. The writing team was also preserved: Hugo Award winner Bartosz Sztybor returns as showrunner, writer and producer, alongside Masahiko Otsuka, another veteran of the initial production.
The official trailer, published on the franchise’s YouTube channel, previews the season’s brutal tone: chases, excessive chrome and a Night City treated as a character in its own right. The series is available with English dubbing and subtitles.
Update 2.5: what changes in Cyberpunk 2077
The big news for players is Update 2.5, distributed free of charge to everyone who owns the game. CD PROJEKT RED published the patch notes one day before launch and held a new REDstreams broadcast on October 21 at 5 PM CEST, streamed on Twitch, YouTube and Steam.
The anime-inspired content goes beyond cosmetics. The update adds the side quest “Clampdown”, set before the events of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. To unlock it, players must complete “The Heist” and two gigs for Wakako, then wait for a message from the fixer. During the quest, they earn a five-piece gear set based on King, Weak’s former alias.
| New feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| “Clampdown” quest | Side quest set before the anime; unlocks the King gear set |
| HKGN 102.0 FM radio | Station featuring tracks from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners |
| Five clothing collections | Maxiwear, Jinguji, NetWatch, IconAmerica and the NUS Infiltrator set |
| Hand cyberware customization | Five Glamdocs offering skins and colors for hand implants |
| “Double Trouble” perk | Lets V dual-wield Power pistols and revolvers |
| Photo Mode | Cyberpunk Trading Card Game frames and new poses |
| Tarot | Twelve new Minor Arcana cards tied to an extended quest |
| Cross-platform mods | Powered by mod.io on PC, Mac, PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 |
Dual wielding, fresh chrome and mods on console
Cyberware customization is arguably the community’s most requested change. Players can now restyle Mantis Blades, Gorilla Arms, the Monowire and the Projectile Launch System at one of five Glamdocs spread across the map — each inside a specific shop, with a voiced intro scene and its own catalog of skins and colors.
The Double Trouble perk in the Cool tree arrives with four auxiliary perks and creates a combat style built around wielding two Power pistols or revolvers. Photo Mode gains Cyberpunk Trading Card Game frames and poses to show off the new skill.
Another highlight is cross-platform mod support via mod.io, which lets players browse and install a selection of player-made mods straight from the in-game menu. The feature works on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 — though achievements and trophies cannot be earned while playing on console from a modded save file.
The package also brings quality-of-life improvements: saves grouped by playthrough in the Load Game menu, item filters for apartment and vehicle stashes, a dedicated icon for modded saves, an FOV slider on consoles and updated AMD FSR options — with FSR 4 and FSR 3.1 Frame Generation, plus DLSS 4 support on PC. Twelve new Minor Arcana tarot cards were also scattered across Night City as part of an extension to the “Fool on the Hill” quest.
“In the City of (Broken) Dreams, it’s not about how you flatline. What matters most is the impact you make with the time you’re given.”

Owners of the Nintendo Switch 2 version and the Mac App Store edition will receive the patch in the following days, according to a CD PROJEKT RED statement. There is no additional charge on any platform.

The weight of the first season
Released in 2022, the first Cyberpunk: Edgerunners became a critical and popular phenomenon by adapting the game’s universe into ten episodes directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi. The series was praised for Studio Trigger’s animation and for David Martinez’s tragedy, and it temporarily boosted Cyberpunk 2077’s active player numbers — an effect CD PROJEKT RED is clearly trying to repeat now, with the update and the anime arriving in the same window.
Readers who want to revisit that ending can check the site’s list of the best anime heroes of the last decade. It is also worth reading why Jackie dies early in Cyberpunk 2077, one of the passages that help explain the franchise’s narrative logic.
What to watch next
CD PROJEKT RED’s bet is twofold: converting the anime audience into players and keeping the community engaged while the franchise lines up its next projects. The early reception of Edgerunners 2, Update 2.5’s performance across platforms and the Switch 2 rollout will be the thermometers for that move.
For now, the message is clear: Night City isn’t done — and the new season is here to remind viewers that, in the Cyberpunk universe, every bit of glory comes at a price. Follow more anime and gaming coverage in O Santuário Geek’s anime section.
