Among the dozens of intricate side quests featured throughout the dark wuxia world of Phantom Blade Zero, none carries as much narrative weight and lasting significance as Whence the Weeping. Although the haunting melody first catches the player's ear early in Chapter 2 across the mist-shrouded valleys of Weeping Creek, completing the quest is a massive journey spanning across multiple endgame zones. Most importantly, finishing this quest is an absolute requirement for unlocking the game's coveted True Ending.

For players exploring S-Game's action-packed RPG, the questline can easily seem overwhelming without clear directions, as it involves multi-stage portal puzzles, hidden taverns, formidable optional bosses, and gathering rare relics to rebuild an ancient musical weapon. If you are already familiar with our combat and Sha-Chi mechanics guide, you know that facing high-tier adversaries requires deliberate execution. Below, we break down every essential step to solve the mystery of The Chord and claim your rightful rewards.

"The song that weeps through the shadows does not plead for revenge, but for liberation. Whoever mends the shattered chords shall pierce through the illusions of the Order." — Inscription recovered in the Village of Lu.

Phase 1: The Weeping Voice and Lady Inanis' revelation

The journey begins during Chapter 2 while exploring Weeping Creek Valley. As Soul wanders across the riverbanks, an eerie crying voice echoes from the northeastern cliffs. Pass by The Beginning Bell and locate the maiden Yu'er. Speaking with her registers Whence the Weeping into your active quest journal.

You will not be able to immediately conclude the task, so proceed through the campaign until Chapter 4. In the Crimson Forest, Soul will awaken inside a secluded cave. Head outside and scout the eastern quadrant of the map to discover the spectral apparition of Lady Inanis.

Lady Inanis reveals that the weeping voice belongs to her captive daughter, The Chord. She directs Soul toward the Crane Bell. Approaching and chiming the Crane Bell triggers a cinematic memory showing The Chord under siege. Once the vision ends, a full day passes in-game, shifting environmental barriers and revealing the entrance to Mirrorwood Depths.

Phase 2: Mirrorwood Depths and the clash with Bai Chilian

Mirrorwood Depths is structured around an ethereal network of blue teleportation portals. From the Mirrorwood Depths Bell, interact with the floating gates to illuminate stone pillars. Beware that many paths are dead ends blocked by thick web barriers. Continue tracking the open gateways until you arrive at the clearing of the Threadbound Great Tree.

Ringing the bell beneath the Great Tree triggers a cutscene introducing Bai Chilian, a fierce adversary wielding chained scythes. Bai Chilian relies on high-speed lunges and vertical aerial sweeps that can instantly deplete Soul's guard gauge if parries are mistimed.

Keep a disciplined spacing, bait his lunges, and counterattack using rapid dual-blade combos right after dodging. Upon defeat, Bai Chilian drops the essential quest piece: the Broken Illusory Pipa. Following the encounter, Soul awakens beside the Place of Awakening Bell in the Village of Lu.

Phase 3: Jewel's advice and Myst's hidden tavern in Pangzhen

As Chapter 5 commences, cross the bridge leading into the Village of Lu to meet the blacksmith Jewel. Inquire about the damaged musical relic in your possession. Jewel will explain that she lacks the specialized skill to restore such intricate spirit technology.

Jewel informs Soul that her sister Myst lives in seclusion in a hidden tavern located within Pangzhen. In Chapter 6, travel to the Huang Manor Crossroads Bell in Pangzhen. Search the streets until you identify an unassuming estate lit by green lanterns.

Step inside to find racks of wine jars alongside one unusually oversized jar in the corner. Smash the large jar to reveal a hidden mechanical lever. Operating the switch opens a secret subterranean hallway leading to Myst's workshop. When you present the broken instrument, Myst agrees to forge it into a legendary combat weapon, provided you recover three specific missing components.

Phase 4: Hunting the three Illusory Pipa components

Each of the three components is locked behind a distinct combat trial or hidden chamber across the game world:

1. Illusory Pipa Head

Gather the Firefly's Memory Flowers while working on the Secrets at the Heart of the Lake side quest. Return to the Temple of Blue Fireflies and unlock the central seal. Head into the subterranean crypt and defeat Dusk, the Puppeteer. Dispatch the explosive puppet minions quickly to isolate Dusk, and defeat him to claim the Illusory Pipa Head.

2. Illusory Pipa Backplate

Track down and defeat Gu Wanyue, the Wailing Wraith in the wetlands, then drop down the nearby stone well. Pick up the Gate Entrance Key located beside the Memory Flower at the bottom of the well. Return to the Village of Lu and unlock the fortified Mandate Encampment gate. Overcome Yubi, No. 21 Swordfighter Puppet in the courtyard, then check the wooden table inside the adjacent building to collect the Illusory Pipa Backplate.

3. Illusory Pipa Strings

Explore the docks in Pangzhen to collect Yan'er's Memory Flowers. Next, travel to the sunken opera house at southern Meigu Lake. On the flooded stage, confront Yan Qiansui, the Zither Maiden. Dodge her piercing sonic waves, break her posture, and defeat her to receive the Illusory Pipa Strings.

Phase 5: Forging the Phantom Edge and freeing The Chord

Deliver all three components to Myst at the Pangzhen secret tavern. Through an exquisite restoration process, Myst restores the relic as a powerful combat tool: the Illusory Pipa Phantom Edge.

In battle, the Pipa fires razor-sharp acoustic blades at distant targets. Its fully charged red projectiles pierce through enemy guards without deflection. Furthermore, striking enemies whose posture is already broken causes temporary mental bewilderment, forcing them to turn their weapons against fellow foes.

Equipped with the Pipa, return to Meigu Lake and approach the dense wall of spirit mist. Playing the instrument disperses the fog, uncovering the trail ascending to the Mountain of Imprisonment. Climb to the peak to face the final guardian: Huangxing, the Kunlun Renegade.

Huangxing is an agile warrior with swift blade sweeps and devastating forward thrusts. Maintain a disciplined counter stance and utilize the Pipa's sonic slashes to stagger him during his recovery frames. Defeating Huangxing awards you Inanis' Radiant Fan Phantom Edge, an exceptional hybrid weapon.

After the battle, leap down into the threaded well located behind the summit arena. In the cavern below, Soul encounters The Chord trapped in chains of dark mist. Playing the restored Pipa plays the soothing melody that breaks her bonds and reunites her spirit with Lady Inanis.
