Ghost of Yotei sold about 5.4 million copies and generated US$ 407 million in revenue — approximately R$ 2.07 billion at the exchange rate of October 18, 2026 — in the first year after launch, according to estimates from Alinea Analytics released on October 16, 2026. The unit volume is lower than that of its predecessor: Ghost of Tsushima had reached nearly 7 million copies at the same point in its life, but the revenue difference between the two titles is only 3%, with US$ 418 million for the 2020 game. A higher launch price and a more restrained discount policy explain the result, and the analyst responsible for the survey is blunt when commenting on the reading that the sequel had failed: "it is completely wrong."

What Alinea Analytics estimated

The numbers come from Alinea Analytics, a games market intelligence firm, in an analysis signed by Rhys Elliott, the company's head of market analysis. The work compares the two Sucker Punch games aligned by launch — that is, placing each title's revenue and sales side by side at the same number of days after release, a methodology the firm uses so as not to confuse games with different sales windows.

It is important to state what these data are and what they are not: they are estimates from an outside institute, not official numbers. Sony does not disclose unit sales for its first-party games, and neither Sony nor Sucker Punch confirmed the figures. Alinea's own bulletin reinforces that these are estimated "sell-through" sales, with no inventory sitting in retail.

Ghost of Yotei is exclusive to PlayStation 5 and launched on October 2, 2025. The game's entry in our catalog lists developer Sucker Punch Productions and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The comparison in numbers

The table below summarizes the gap between the two titles over the same post-launch interval, according to the Alinea Analytics estimate:

MetricGhost of YoteiGhost of Tsushima (same period)
Copies soldabout 5.4 millionnearly 7 million
Cumulative revenueUS$ 407 millionUS$ 418 million
Revenue per buyerabout 26% higherbaseline
Launch priceUS$ 70US$ 60
Discounts on the PS Store2 two-week promotions, at US$ 50already at US$ 45 less than three months after launch
PlatformsPS5 onlyPS4 (117 million installed base) and PS5

Why fewer copies do not mean less money

The explanation lies on two fronts. The first is price. Ghost of Tsushima debuted in 2020 at US$ 60 and, less than three months later, was already showing up at US$ 45 in sales. Ghost of Yotei arrived at US$ 70 (about R$ 356) and, according to Alinea, has so far received only two two-week discounts, both bringing the price to US$ 50. When a game almost never drops in price, every copy sold leaves more revenue — and the result is that 26% more revenue per buyer compared with its predecessor.

The second front is the installed base. At the equivalent point in Ghost of Tsushima's life, there were about 117 million PlayStation 4 and 10 million PlayStation 5 consoles on the market, plus the boost in demand caused by the covid-19 pandemic. Ghost of Yotei, on the other hand, came out only for PS5, with an installed base close to 100 million consoles — a difference that helps explain why fewer people bought it, without that indicating rejection of the game.

It is worth noting a counterpoint that Alinea itself raises: Ghost of Yotei's revenue is starting to flatten out faster than Tsushima's over the same period. The firm notes, however, that the arrival of new PS5 owners — driven by the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, set for November 19, 2026 — could soften that curve, since the game tends to be one of the first purchases of those who have just joined the platform.

A long-lasting seller in 2026

The first year's performance was not concentrated in the launch window. According to the survey, Ghost of Yotei sold 1.8 million copies in 2026, which corresponds to US$ 121 million in revenue (close to R$ 616 million). In the third quarter of this year alone there were about 500,000 copies, with nearly US$ 30 million collected.

The figure stands out because the analyst himself describes the period as one of the busiest and highest-quality release calendars of all time. Even so, the game kept selling with few discounts. Another notable number is the share of physical media: 36.8% of sales, a high rate by current PlayStation standards, in which most revenue usually comes from digital.

New content and the effect of the Complete Edition

The final stretch of the first year coincided with a refresh of the package. On October 1, 2026, Sony released the narrative expansion Echoes of Sekigahara and the Most Wanted mode, a run-based combat variation — roguelike style — with four playable characters, among them Jin Sakai, protagonist of the first game, according to the announcement on the PlayStation Blog.

Along with the content, Sony retired the original version of the game and began selling the Complete Edition, for US$ 70, which brings together the base game, the new features and other updates. Those who already owned the title can pay US$ 14.99 for the upgrade. Alinea estimates that about 50,000 people bought the new digital edition in just over two weeks, generating more than US$ 2 million.

The impact, however, shows up less in sales and more in players returning. According to the firm, the game had been maintaining about 150,000 daily active users in the two months before October 1; with the new content, the number rose to more than 300,000, with a peak of 327,000. That means more than 6% of the player base came back to check out the new features — a result considered solid amid a very competitive period for the industry.

What the case says about Sony's strategy

For Alinea, the performance reinforces a strategy that PlayStation has been designing: extracting more revenue per player instead of chasing volume at any cost. A full price maintained for longer, fewer promotions and paid additional content help sustain revenue even when the number of copies falls below the predecessor.

"Yes: anyone who says Ghost of Yotei is a failure is completely wrong."

— Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, in a bulletin published on October 16, 2026 (free translation)

The analyst also describes the sequel as an "evergreen seller," capable of continuing to add copies long after the launch window. The final reading is that of a game that sold less than its predecessor but earned practically the same — and that still has a second year ahead with the arrival of a new wave of PS5 owners, a complete package on sale and an ongoing content schedule.

The numbers in this article are estimates from Alinea Analytics published on October 16, 2026 and reported by Inven Global.
