FFXIV: Yoshida reveals changes coming in Evercold
Published on · Updated on
At Tokyo Fan Festival, Yoshida discussed Black Mage changes, reusable fishing bait, housing improvements and the end of Poetics in Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold.

Naoki Yoshida, director of Final Fantasy XIV, previewed gameplay and system changes for the Evercold expansion during two question-and-answer sessions at Tokyo Fan Festival, held on October 31 and November 1, 2026. Highlights included a Black Mage overhaul, reusable fishing bait selection and the replacement of Allagan Tomestones of Poetics. The answers were delivered in Japanese and reached a global audience through a volunteer translation reported by PCGamesN.

The sessions followed the main Evercold presentation. According to Ken Allsop’s report for PCGamesN, Yoshida answered audience questions alongside community producer Toshio Murouchi. Because the discussion took place in Japanese, the remarks below come from a volunteer translation posted on the official Discord and reproduced by the outlet. They are not an independently verified transcript.
Black Mage is set for a change of pace
One of the most concrete answers concerned Black Mage’s evolved mode. Yoshida reportedly said that Triplecast would stop functioning as three instant casts and be replaced by a different mechanic. Ley Lines would also change: rather than requiring players to remain within the area for 30 seconds, the ability would let them activate skills, leave to handle a mechanic and return afterward.
“Triplecast is going away. It will become something else, not three instant casts.”
The proposed change suggests an effort to reduce the immobility associated with the current rotation without abandoning Black Mage’s emphasis on planning. Yoshida reportedly avoided implementation details and left the final decision to the person responsible for the new combat system. According to the coverage, a full presentation of each job’s abilities is expected in a future broadcast.
Poetics will go, but progression will continue
Yoshida also reportedly confirmed that Allagan Tomestones of Poetics would be removed in Evercold. Players have used the currency for years to obtain equipment and rewards from earlier expansions. Its replacement therefore matters particularly to anyone maintaining alternate characters or returning after a break.
“Poetics is going away. Thank you, Poetics.”
The report says the director mentioned an alternative system for obtaining gear for other jobs and older rewards. Acquisition methods, weekly limits and the replacement currency have not yet been presented. The statement therefore confirms the end of Poetics, but does not establish how every stage of progression will work as the next cycle arrives.
Fishing and housing get convenience improvements
For Fishers, the proposal is to remove the need to carry individual units of each bait. According to the account of the session, bait unlocked through levels, quests or NPC purchases would become part of a permanent selection list. Once acquired, it could be used without consuming inventory stock. Yoshida reportedly ruled out a separate bait inventory precisely because the 8.0 system should make carrying those supplies unnecessary.
For housing decoration, the team is working on an update after Evercold that would allow objects to be positioned without relying on glitches or improvised workarounds. Yoshida reportedly said the intention was to cover almost every item, with possible exceptions for some light sources. The statement indicates a development direction, rather than guaranteeing identical behavior for every catalog item at launch.
The director also said the team intends to resume Island Sanctuary updates once work on expansion 8.0 becomes less demanding. No date or feature list was given. Regarding character customization, he mentioned adjustments in progress and noted that the Evercold benchmark is expected in early December, with a broadcast before its release.
What already has an official date
The changes discussed in the Q&A still require further explanation. Square Enix has, however, officially announced the release schedule: the Lodestone lists early access for February 19, 2027, and the full launch for February 23. The official page also introduces the expansion and provides preorder information.
- October 31 and November 1, 2026: Tokyo Fan Festival and the question-and-answer sessions covered by the press.
- Early December 2026: the reported target for the Evercold benchmark.
- February 19, 2027: early access begins, according to the Lodestone.
- February 23, 2027: the expansion’s official full release.
The schedule and expansion presentation are available on the official Evercold page on the Lodestone. For more coverage, visit the portal’s English edition and games section.
The event’s answers outline the expansion’s priorities: making Black Mage movement easier, simplifying fishing preparation and revisiting the economy of older equipment. Square Enix’s next step will be to explain how those changes work in practice, particularly the replacement for Poetics and the rules governing progression. Until then, the remarks attributed to Yoshida should be read as previews, while the release dates have already been officially confirmed.
