South Korean studio Oneway Ticket Studio has officially announced a radical change to the structure of The Midnight Walkers. In a statement published on Steam on the 16th, the project’s director, known as Ray, announced the end of the live service and the shutdown of the official dedicated servers. To keep the title from disappearing from users’ libraries, the team completely reworked the game, turning it into a cooperative experience focused on PvE (Player versus Environment) with support for Peer-to-Peer (P2P) connection.
End of Dedicated Servers and the Peer-to-Peer Solution
The decision came after an internal reassessment of the project’s long-term sustainability. The development team concluded that keeping the network infrastructure active and the game’s ongoing operation had become financially unfeasible. Instead of simply removing access to the purchased title, the developer chose to rework the network architecture around P2P technology.
In the Peer-to-Peer model, the player’s own computer acts as the match’s main server (host), allowing other users to connect directly to it. As a result, game owners keep the option to enjoy cooperative matches without depending on any validation or hosting on Oneway Ticket Studio’s central servers.
Reworked Balance and Game Systems
The change of direction required deep adjustments to the original mechanics. Since the title was originally designed around PvPvE dynamics (Player versus Player versus Environment), removing player-versus-player combat forced the removal of the in-game Market and the competitive ranking systems.
To fit progression to the new purely cooperative format, the team adjusted combat balance, the internal economy, and the character progression curve. The focus is now fully on combat against the map’s threats and team survival.
Team’s Commitment to the Franchise’s Future
Despite shutting down the live-service structure, director Ray stressed a sense of responsibility toward the community that purchased the product. The transition to P2P was described by leadership as the minimum effort needed to keep the work alive and playable indefinitely.
The studio does not rule out returning to develop new content for the The Midnight Walkers universe in the future, should new investment opportunities or favorable business partnerships arise. For now, the P2P- and PvE-adapted version stands as the game’s definitive, self-sustaining edition on Steam.
