Fans of school comedies with hints of mystery and scientific deduction have plenty to celebrate: the acclaimed light novel series The Science Notes by Delta and Gamma (known in Japan as Delta to Gamma no Rigakubu Note / デルタとガンマの理学部ノート) will officially receive a television anime adaptation. The news was formally announced by Japanese publisher Kadokawa during the global broadcast of the annual Dengeki Bunko Fall Festival Online 2026 event. The production marks another major milestone in the winning partnership between writer Takuma Sakai and illustrator Asagi Tōsaka, the same creative mind behind the award-winning hit Butareba: The Story of a Man Turned into a Pig (Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro).

1. Official announcement at Dengeki Bunko Fall Festival Online 2026

The production reveal took place during Dengeki Bunko's autumn celebration panels, one of the most prestigious editorial labels in the Japanese publishing industry. To celebrate the work's transition from print to screen, Kadokawa aired a special animated promotional teaser, whose main narration was entrusted to talented voice actress Kanna Nakamura (known for her expressive roles in contemporary animation), charmingly playing the charismatic heroine Rio Iwama.

The promotional video showcased exquisite concept art by Asagi Tōsaka, previewing for viewers the luminous and warm aesthetic that will set the animation's tone. Although further details about the animation staff, responsible studio and exact premiere date on Japanese television should be revealed at upcoming franchise events, the project already ranks among the most anticipated releases for avid Dengeki readers.

2. Synopsis and premise: everyday enigmas and experiments of the heart

The plot of The Science Notes by Delta and Gamma takes place in the halls of the picturesque Tsunagai High School and follows the curious, engaging daily life of its science club members. Far from sterile laboratories or complex formulas impenetrable to lay audiences, the work highlights young students who use the empirical scientific method — meticulous observation, hypothesis formulation, controlled experiments and logical deductions — to unravel small enigmas, anomalies and dilemmas of everyday life surrounding the school community.

However, the great charm that captivated the Japanese public lies in the masterful balance between scientific rigor and the tenderness of a youthful romance. Alongside investigations and practical physics, chemistry and biology tests in the school lab at dusk, the protagonists navigate the uncertainties and discoveries of first love, establishing a sensitive, poetic analogy: just like the most mysterious natural phenomena in the cosmos, the feelings of the human heart rarely behave in a strictly predictable way in linear mathematical equations.

“The Science Notes by Delta and Gamma shines by turning scientific methodology into a poetic, moving metaphor about growing up, curiosity and the emotional complexities of first love among young students.”

3. The golden duo: the legacy of Takuma Sakai and Asagi Tōsaka

Author Takuma Sakai is no newcomer to the light-novel prestige circuit. In 2019, Sakai rose to literary consecration by winning the coveted Gold Prize (effectively second place among thousands of entrants from across the country) in the 26th edition of the renowned Dengeki Novel Prize with the work Butareba: The Story of a Man Turned into a Pig (Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro). Commercially released in March 2020 under Asagi Tōsaka's expressive, detailed art, the fantasy saga won legions of readers, gained a manga adaptation and was turned into a TV anime in October 2023.

With The Science Notes by Delta and Gamma, Sakai and Tōsaka have shown formidable creative versatility, trading the isekai universe for a cozy, contemporary school setting. The new light novel's publication formally began through Kadokawa in November 2024, when the first physical volume hit Japanese bookstores. The series' fourth volume is scheduled for release on October 9, 2026, consolidating the work's regularity and strong reception among young readers.

4. Manga adaptation and immediate community buzz

The franchise's accelerated growth is also reflected in comics form. On April 27, 2025, Kadokawa began the official serialization of the work's manga adaptation in the pages of monthly magazine Comic Dengeki DaiohG, under the refined art of illustrator and manga artist Lap Tsutsumi. Right after the anime announcement broadcast, Tsutsumi publicly celebrated the historic moment by publishing on social media a beautiful commemorative illustration featuring the science club protagonists:
