The Trigun franchise is getting a new novel. The autumn issue of Shueisha's Jump SQ. RISE magazine announced last Thursday that Trigun Manuscript will arrive in Japanese bookstores this winter, written by Takehiko Oxi, the story writer behind Trigun Stampede and Trigun Stargaze, with cover art and interior illustrations by Yasuhiro Nightow, the creator of the original series. The announcement was shared by the anime's official X account, which also confirmed that further details will be revealed at a later date.

The news marks an unusual move for the franchise: instead of adapting the 1990s manga once again, the new book builds directly on the universe established by Studio Orange's CGI reboot. According to the magazine, the story will be based on the world of Trigun Stampede and Trigun Stargaze, the final phase of the animated project that premiered in January.

What is Trigun Manuscript?

Trigun Manuscript is the franchise's first official novel in many years and the first to be built on the reboot's continuity. The title appears in the announcement with only a "this winter" release window — in the Japanese calendar, the period between December and February. Publisher, exact format, page count, price and release date have not yet been disclosed.

The choice of name is no accident. "Manuscript" evokes both the literary draft and the records and documents that run through the Trigun mythology, which is marked by accounts of the past of the planet No Man's Land and by the memory of its survivors. So far, however, there is no official synopsis confirming which period or character the book will cover.

What is confirmed is the division of labor: Oxi writes, Nightow illustrates. It is a rare combination, since the manga creator usually stays in the role of supervisor on adaptations. Here, he returns to drawing to produce original art for a text that is not his own.

Who is behind the project

Takehiko Oxi is a central figure in the reinvention of Trigun. He was credited with the original story for Trigun Stampede, the 2023 series that rebuilt Vash's story for a new generation, and returned in the same role on Trigun Stargaze. His résumé also includes script and narrative-structure work on anime productions, which explains the choice to have him lead a prose text set in this universe.

Yasuhiro Nightow, in turn, is the author of the original manga, published between 1995 and 1997 in Tokuma Shoten's Monthly Shonen Captain and continued in Trigun Maximum in Shonengahosha's Young King Ours until 2007. The comic was released in English by Dark Horse Comics and became one of the most influential science-fiction titles of the 1990s, blending western, sci-fi and absurd humor.

"Novel: Trigun Manuscript — scheduled for release this winter. The long-awaited novelization of Takehiko Oxi's story for the Trigun Stampede and Trigun Stargaze anime! Cover art and interior illustrations drawn by Yasuhiro Nightow. Details will be revealed soon."

Where the story fits in the timeline

Trigun Stargaze is the "final phase" announced in 2023 and revealed under that name at Anime Expo 2024. The story takes place 2.5 years after the end of Trigun Stampede and closes the arc begun in the reboot. The series premiered on TV Tokyo on January 10, 2026, with simulcasting on Crunchyroll and an English dub.

Unlike the first season, directed by Kenji Mutou, the final phase was directed by Masako Sato, with scripts and supervision by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu. Kouji Tajima returned as concept character designer, and Kiyotaka Oshiyama took over animation character design. The main cast kept Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Vash, Sakura Ando as Meryl Stryfe and Yoshimasa Hosoya as Nicholas D. Wolfwood.

If the novel follows the magazine's description and is set in that same world, it will likely explore gaps between the two seasons or deepen events mentioned only in passing in the anime. None of these possibilities has been officially confirmed, and the anime account itself asks fans to wait for more information.

A franchise in expansion

The novel announcement comes at a moment of commercial expansion for Trigun, which returned to the spotlight with the reboot and has been receiving a steady stream of merchandise. Beyond the book, the franchise has accumulated collectible releases, pop-up events and even an official tabletop RPG based on Trigun Stampede, announced in late October.

What is known about the release and format

The information available so far is deliberately sparse. The announcement says "this winter" without committing to a month or day. The mention of Jump SQ. RISE as the venue for the reveal suggests the work will be published by Shueisha, although the publisher of the volume itself has not been formalized in the material released.

There is also no confirmation that the book will receive an international edition or a Portuguese translation. Historically, novels tied to Japanese franchises reach the West only when there is a specific licensing deal, which usually happens after the Japanese launch. For Brazilian readers, the most likely path is to follow announcements from publishers already releasing light novels in the country.

It is worth remembering that Trigun has a long relationship with the publishing market. The original manga was published in Brazil, and the franchise retains a readership that has followed Nightow's work for decades. An official novel, with new art by the author, is likely to appeal both to that nostalgic audience and to viewers who discovered the series through the reboot.

Why the announcement matters

Anime novels are often treated as secondary products, but Trigun Manuscript carries a different weight. By putting Oxi, the narrative architect of the reboot, in charge of the text and Nightow on art, the production signals that the book is not just a catalog item: it is a canonical extension of the universe Studio Orange has been building since 2023.

The choice also reinforces the strategy of keeping the franchise active between seasons. With the conclusion of Stargaze, the main anime reaches the end of its arc, and the novel works as a bridge for audiences who still want to consume stories in that world. If it succeeds, it could open space for other publications of the kind.

For now, all that remains is to wait. The anime's official account promises that new details will be released soon, and the expectation is that the first promotional material will reveal the synopsis, price and exact date. For those who have followed Vash's journey since the 1995 manga, the news is a reminder that the Humanoid Typhoon keeps finding ways to return.
