Fans of Nintendo 64 classics were in for a surprise this week. The remaster of Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, the acclaimed 1998 shooter, was quietly launched (stealth-release) with native versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game, which was already available via backward compatibility, now receives a fully optimized version for current-gen hardware. The release of Turok 2 on PS5 and Xbox follows the arrival of other titles in the franchise by Nightdive Studios.
Turok 2 on PS5: What's New in the Remaster?
This isn't just a simple port. The remaster, originally released in 2017 and now native to the new generation, was developed by Nightdive Studios and completely rebuilt on a new graphics engine. For the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, players can expect support for high resolutions, improved textures, and enhanced lighting.
Additionally, the modernization includes real-time reflections and shadows, significant improvements to character models, and an increased draw distance, modernizing the classic experience.
An Absolute N64 Classic
Originally released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil was a critical and commercial success, selling over a million copies at the time. The game is known for its creative arsenal and complex levels.
In the plot, after defeating the Campaigner in the first game, Turok throws the Chronocepter into a volcano. The explosion, however, ends up awakening an even deadlier force, The Primagen, which threatens to merge Earth with the Nether World.
The Turok Franchise on New-Gen
This release practically completes the main trilogy on modern hardware. The remaster of the first Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (1997) also received its native version for PS5 and Xbox Series X earlier this year, while Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion has been available since 2023.
The new version of Turok 2 is available on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store for US$ 19.99. However, fans hoping for Turok: Evolution will have to wait, as the game remains "stuck" on older hardware, with no remaster currently planned.
