South Korean developer Pearl Abyss globally deployed on Thursday (October 29, 2026) the much-anticipated update 2.04.00 for Crimson Desert across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, marking the official launch of the paid expansion “Charting the Unknown.” The package stands as the most comprehensive overhaul to the open-world action RPG since its March debut, opening the massive Great Ocean of Pywel as a playable territory, introducing underwater diving mechanics with an oxygen gauge, autonomous management of liberated strongholds, modular home construction, and an all-new social courtship and marriage system. The update dramatically expands the scale of the base game following weeks of international anticipation.

The Great Ocean of Pywel and new naval frontiers

The centerpiece of patch 2.04.00 is the nautical opening of the continent. The Great Ocean of Pywel is no longer a scenic boundary; it is now an expansive maritime domain unlocked through the quest “A Wider World.” This naval journey becomes accessible to adventurers who have completed the Howling Hill main story arc and expanded the Greymane base camp to the required threshold.

With open seas accessible, players gain access to ships that function as new utility mounts. Vessels can be constructed via companion dispatch missions or purchased directly from fleetmasters stationed in Demeniss and Delesyia. In addition to enabling full hull and sail customization with parts acquired in these ports, ships facilitate naval trade routes with unique goods and allow players to engage in combat against hostile forces on the high seas. Several uncharted islands have been peppered across the waters, accompanied by treasure maps that reward intrepid explorers.

Underwater diving, breath meters, and aquatic mounts

Exploration also descends beneath the waves. The update incorporates an independent breath gauge that dictates how long the protagonist can stay underwater. Players can enhance their lung capacity by refining specialized diving suits and consuming specific food recipes and potions that temporarily restore oxygen reserves while exploring submerged ruins. In addition, specialized gear now allows the A.T.A.G construct to operate fully underwater.

The oceanic ecosystem features several tamable marine mounts. Depending on the creature encountered, oceanic fauna can be subdued in combat or nourished with feed to build Trust. Once the relationship meter reaches the required threshold, the aquatic mount can be registered permanently, granting swift transit across deep oceanic chasms.

Expanded housing, stronghold management, and decoratable castles

In the realm of lifestyle mechanics, update 2.04.00 revamps residential building. After finishing “Luke's Request” and establishing the camp in Howling Hill, players can design custom house floor plans and freely place structural elements such as walls, windows, trees, flowerbeds, and stone pathways through the Free Construction interface. In total, 17 new residential homes can be constructed via comrade dispatch missions.

The patch also introduces two regal castles that can be fully furnished and lived in once liberated: Drakesfall Castle (awarded upon completing the Journey's End quest) and Flame Knight's Castle (unlocked following Damiane's Politician mission). On the world map, Greymane-controlled strongholds now appear in light blue, featuring a dedicated Facilities tab where players can run restaurants, sawmills, smithies, and tailor shops that generate passive income even while away adventuring.

“Charting the Unknown redefines how players experience Pywel, merging terrestrial and naval warfare with an organic lifestyle loop of base management, community bonds, and deep ocean exploration.”

Romance, marriage proposals, and life partners in Pywel

Another major highlight is the introduction of an advanced Trust tier with non-playable characters. When talking with residents throughout Pywel, players can initiate the Flirt interaction to chat or present gifts, raising intimacy once per day for each action type. When the Trust meter reaches the maximum threshold of 100 points, players can propose marriage to their chosen partner.

Following marriage, the spouse moves into one of the residences designated by the player and displays their portrait icon on the world map and minimap. Companions can travel alongside the protagonist, deliver periodic gifts, and have their hairstyles and garments altered at urban barber shops. Should marital life sour, the system supports divorce, though dissolution incurs a substantial financial penalty.

Garden of Trials combat arena and boss gauntlet

For players eager to prove their prowess in high-tier combat, the patch activates the Garden of Trials, located adjacent to the Axiom Archive Abyss. This endgame arena features 10 consecutive challenge tiers against elite adversaries, demanding tight execution since all restorative food items are strictly disabled during battle.

Adventurers can brave the arena solo or assemble a squad of up to three warriors — choosing the exact entry sequence for Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane. If the active combatant falls, the next comrade steps onto the battlefield instantly. Completing each tier permanently empowers one skill from the characters' repertory. Furthermore, formidable bosses conquered during the campaign can now be challenged to rematches using Memory Fragments.

Summary of Crimson Desert patch 2.04.00 additions

The table below summarizes the key gameplay additions and structural systems introduced with the update:

Gameplay Domain Core Features in Patch 2.04.00
World & Exploration Playable Great Ocean of Pywel, diving, 17 residences, and uncharted frontier islands.
Naval & Mounts Customizable sailing ships, maritime trading routes, and tamable underwater mounts.
Lifestyle & Housing Freeform home construction, passive stronghold revenue, and camp visitor festivals.
Social & Romance Advanced Trust tier, daily flirting, marriage proposals, cohabitation, and divorce.
Combat Challenges Garden of Trials (10 no-healing rounds), kitchen combat utensils, and boss rematches.
Graphics & UI Decoupled Upscaling (DLSS/FSR) and Frame Generation toggles for PC performance.

Performance settings and save file compatibility

On the technical front, version 2.04.00 separates the Upscaling and Frame Generation toggles within the PC graphics options. This allows players to combine different vendor technologies — such as pairing DLSS resolution reconstruction with FSR Frame Generation to maintain blistering framerates during particle-heavy naval skirmishes.

Pearl Abyss cautions that save files created while the DLC is installed cannot be loaded on older client versions without the expansion present. Players who followed our earlier reporting on the Charting the Unknown announcement and preload schedule can download the complete patch across all platforms now.
