Ocean’s Eleven — known in Brazil as Onze Homens e um Segredo — is a heist film directed by Steven Soderbergh and released in 2001, starring George Clooney as Danny Ocean. In the plot, the just-released con man assembles a team of ten specialists to rob, in a single night, the vaults of three Las Vegas casinos: Bellagio, Mirage and MGM Grand — 150 million dollars. A critical and box-office hit, the film became a cult favorite among the geek community thanks to the cast’s incredible chemistry, its sharp pacing and twists that still spark theories and debate today.
Ocean’s Eleven Cast
The greatest strength of Ocean’s Eleven is its cast. Soderbergh assembled a team of stars at the peak of fame — and, rarest of all, with real chemistry between them. The heist requires exactly eleven people, and each one joins the crew with a defined role:
- George Clooney — Danny Ocean, the mastermind of the operation, fresh out of prison and willing to risk everything to rob the casinos of the man dating his ex-wife.
- Brad Pitt — Rusty Ryan, the right-hand man, a master of disguises and surveillance — the final poker scene between the two is one of the most quoted by the community.
- Matt Damon — Linus Caldwell, the rookie, a pickpocket in training who inherits the tensest role in the plan.
- Don Cheadle — Basher Tarr, the explosives expert, with a cockney accent and humor always simmering.
- Bernie Mac — Frank Catton, the con artist posing as casino security to monitor the vault from the inside.
- Casey Affleck and Scott Caan — Virgil and Turk Malloy, the mechanic brothers, experts in vehicles and in eternal rivalry.
- Elliott Gould — Reuben Tishkoff, the retired Las Vegas mogul who bankrolls the operation.
- Carl Reiner — Saul Bloom, the veteran con man, who takes on a false identity to fool casino security.
- Shaobo Qin — Yen, the acrobat and contortionist — responsible for one of the tensest scenes in the film.
- Eddie Jemison — Livingston Dell, the technology and electronic surveillance genius.
The main cast is rounded out by Julia Roberts (Tess Ocean, the true motive behind the whole plan) and Andy García (Terry Benedict, the casino owner and the story’s antagonist). There are thirteen names on screen, but the heist is an exactly-eleven operation. For the official and complete credit list, the film’s page on IMDb is the community’s reference.

Ocean’s Eleven Trivia
Behind the scenes
Ocean’s Eleven was born from a simple idea of Clooney himself: making a movie with friends. The vacation vibe on set spills onto the screen — much of the crew’s “conspiracy” was real conversation between the actors. The behind-the-scenes stories produced some of the most repeated tales in the community:
- The film was one of the first to shoot real scenes inside the Bellagio — the casino rarely allows film productions, and the production also shut down the Mirage and the MGM Grand to complete the trio.
- The slow-motion walk of the group through the Bellagio lobby became one of the most iconic images of the 2000s and a reference in fan edits to this day.
- The poker scenes turned out better because the actors played real games during breaks from filming — the table dynamics were genuine.
- The Las Vegas blackout was built with computer graphics over real footage of the Strip: it is the most expensive scene in the film and one of the most remembered.
- Angie Dickinson, the Tess of the original 1960 film, makes a cameo in the 2001 version — a direct nod to the classic.
The remake
Ocean’s Eleven is a remake of the 1960 film of the same name, starring the legendary Rat Pack: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Angie Dickinson. In the original version, the gang of friends tries to rob five Las Vegas casinos on New Year’s Eve. Soderbergh kept the backbone — a casino heist pulled off by a group of friends — and modernized everything: more technology, a tighter script and twice the charisma. It is one of the most successful remakes in cinema history, and the community loves comparing the two versions scene by scene.
The soundtrack
The Ocean’s Eleven soundtrack is an essential part of the mood. Composed by David Holmes, it blends jazz, lounge and electronic beats — the main theme, nicknamed “69 Police” by fans, instantly became the franchise’s trademark. Diana Krall’s recording of The Look of Love scores the most sophisticated scenes, and the whole set created the “elegant heist” atmosphere that later became Soderbergh’s visual and sonic signature. The opening, with the title appearing to the sound of the theme, is already a masterclass in mood-building.
The Ocean’s Eleven Ending Explained
Warning: spoilers from here on. If you have not seen the film yet, watch it first — and then come back to check whether your theory matched what happened on screen.
The heist is a mechanism of parts that only fit together at the end. The four-stage plan:
- The insider: Linus poses as a security company representative and gains access to the Bellagio vault guards, swapping the shift for men handpicked by the team.
- The dig: meanwhile, the crew opens a path through the maintenance shaft below the vault and reaches the safe from underneath, without touching the armored doors.
- The blackout: the “pinch”, an electromagnetic device hidden inside the vault, knocks out power across all of Las Vegas for a few minutes. The cameras reboot and, upon rebooting, show the vault intact — while the money leaves through the hole in the floor.
- Yen: the contortionist enters the vault hidden in one of the money bags and is the one who unlocks the vault from the inside. The film’s final gag is his: when the vault is reopened the next day, Yen jumps out of the bag and escapes.
And here is the twist that fuels theories to this day: the money was never the goal. The crew takes the 150 million, but returns it all to the vault before dawn. The reveal video the team leaves for Benedict shows the complete heist — and Danny’s final message: everything is exactly where it should be, except one thing: Tess. The operation’s true prize was winning back his ex-wife, and the entire plan was built as the greatest declaration of love (and humiliation) ever recorded in a casino. Benedict keeps the money but loses the girlfriend — and the final scene shows Danny and Tess reuniting on the sidewalk, while the video reveals every trick of the crew.

Is the Ocean’s Eleven heist possible in real life?
Fiction, by a wide margin. The way the crew manipulates cameras, power and security shifts is dramatic license — a real casino vault has independent layers of protection that do not depend on the city’s power grid. The fun lies in the fictional engineering, and that is exactly what keeps the community’s theories alive to this day.
