Bethesda: Devs Denounce Frequent Layoffs Under Xbox

Bethesda developers and the OneBGS union protest mass Xbox layoffs and the loss of veteran talent. See the details!

Bethesda: Devs Denounce Frequent Layoffs Under Xbox

The culture of stability that once defined Bethesda studios has undergone a drastic transformation since the acquisition by Microsoft and the Xbox division. Amid protests staged by employees across North America, veteran developers revealed that staff cuts, once considered rare in the ZeniMax era, have become predictable, yearly events.

The mobilization, dubbed #SaveOurDevs, was organized by the OneBGS (One Bethesda Game Studio) union in partnership with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), taking place simultaneously in nine cities across the United States and Canada to denounce the severe impact of layoffs on studio routines and game quality.

The Contrast Between the ZeniMax Era and Microsoft Control

For longtime professionals, the sense of job security has vanished. Alex Nguyen, a lead character artist who joined Bethesda before the billion-dollar acquisition, noted that ZeniMax took a patient approach to troubled launches.

As examples, Nguyen cited the turbulent launches of Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls Online. On both occasions, company leadership granted time and stability so teams could identify flaws, rework systems, and turn the titles into long-term successes without resorting to mass layoffs.

“That was one of the great benefits of working here. That is why so many people had long careers and said: ‘this is the place where I will retire’. But since we came under the Microsoft umbrella, we feel something has fundamentally changed. We had no layoffs before, and suddenly we started having annual layoffs.”

Loss of Institutional Knowledge and Overload

Unlike corporate statements that often attribute cuts to trimming bureaucratic layers or middle-management roles, union representatives stress that the dismissed professionals are precisely those working directly on game production.

Nathan Hahn, a technical producer at Bethesda for four years, emphasized that the involuntary departure of veterans creates hard-to-solve technical bottlenecks:

  • Loss of critical know-how: Entire systems of internal code and tool pipelines built over decades are left unmaintained when their original creators are laid off.
  • Overload on remaining teams: With delivery schedules upheld by Xbox leadership, the developers who stay must take on additional duties without a matching increase in deadlines or resources.
  • Irreparable damage to morale: The constant fear of new rounds of cuts directly affects creativity and teams’ willingness to take innovative risks.

NLRB Complaint and Shelved Proposals

Tension between the workforce and Microsoft leadership has escalated to the legal arena. The union confirmed that a formal complaint over unfair labor practices was filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against the tech giant.

According to Hahn, the union had drafted and delivered to management, in February of this year, a structured proposal with negotiated guidelines for potential staff reductions that would minimize human and operational impact. The company, however, shelved the document for four months without providing any official response before launching the new wave of layoffs already affecting more than 1,600 professionals across the brand’s gaming structure.

The Future of Projects in Development

While major franchises such as The Elder Scrolls VI and upcoming Starfield expansions remain on Microsoft’s public schedule, the development community warns that the sustainability of complex productions depends primarily on retaining experienced human talent, not just financial capital.
